Games are activities both mental and physical that helps to rejuvenate and charge our mind and body. Games can be played indoor or outdoor, they can involve physical as well as mental exercise. Ancient Indians and Maharajas played games for their entertainment. Few of the games which were invented in ancient India has got acclamation throughout the world today. Let’s know some historical facts about some Traditional Games that are originated in India.
Kabaddi has is roots 4000 years ago and was first played in Tamil Nadu. There are seven players in each team and the game is played between two teams for 40 minutes. Kabaddi required body strength where a player from a team holds his breath and enter the other team’s territory. He has to touch one or more players of the other team and return to his team. In this process, physical strength is tested as it requires strength and strategy to play.
It is the oldest form of outdoor games invented in India. Its origin takes back to prehistoric times. It is played among two teams of 12 members each. 9 players of a team enter the opposition court whereas the remains 3 members try to be untouched by the opponent team members.
Kho-Kho was first played in the year 1914 and first Kho-Kho championship was held in the year 1959 under Kho-Kho federation of India formed in the year 1955. Kho-Kho was later introduced as a demonstration sports at Berlin 1936 Olympics Games and later Kho-Kho federation was formed and Kho -Kho was made popular in countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
Known to be the then national game of India, Pachisi is an indoor board game originated in medieval India. It is played on a board with a symmetrical cross. It is played with tokens and cowries shells which decide the movement of the players token around the board. Pachisi took its name from the Hindi word Pachisi which means 25, that you can score maximum in this game. There is a simpler version of this game today named Ludo which is played in every Indian household and is popular among other countries under different names.
Chess is an indoor board game played between two players. It comprises one board which has got 64 black and white squares. It consists of 16 tokens to each party which is called pawn, king, queen, bishops and knights. All the token category moves separately in different ways. The motive of the game is to checkmate to the opponent which can end the game. It is marked that chess was first played sometimes before the 7th century in India.

Polo in its present form was originated in Manipur, a Northeastern state of India. It is one of the most ancient games that involves team playing. It is also known as the sport of kings. It is played between two teams, each comprising of 4 members mounted on a horse. They are equipped with a long-handled mallet by which they strike a wooden ball through the opposition’s goal post.
British military in the 19th century made it popular sports throughout the world and now it is played professionally by 16 countries and was an Olympic sport from 1900-1936.
Snakes and ladders
Snakes and ladders is a board game invented as early as 13th century AD by Saint Gyandev as per historians. It is played among minimum 2 players or maximum 4. The board consists of grids numbered from 1-100 along with ladders and snakes in it. A dice is rolled to determine the number of shifts per token. If token land on a grid with snake mouth then it will go down to the grid when its tail ends, whereas if it lands on a grid where a ladder is starting then it will accelerate and hop to the top of the ladder. So there are expected ups and downs in this game and it is expected to take 20-40 minutes for two players to finish one game.
